Mouse on Mars

Mouse on Mars is a cultic duo from Germany (Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma) that has been making electronic music since 1993. Their music a quirky blend of IDM, krautrock, disco and ambient with heavy dollop of analog synth sounds, cross-frequency modulations and live conventional instruments. The productions of MOM do not shy away from fractures and deconstructions of conventional patterns in electronic music; at the same time, they also play with these patterns.

Drafting influences as far and wide as Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, and Lee “Scratch” Perry, the duo’s early albums revealed a multi-textured fusion of krautrock sensibilities and cool post-techno refinement. Their first album, Vulvaland (1994) is a fine mixture of ambient and dance forms. Their second album, Iaora Tahiti encompasses a wider variety of electronic dance genres. On Niun Niggung (2000) and Idiology (2001) the live instruments are more prominent, while Radical Connector (2004) has more "pop" feeling. The last two of these albums increasingly include vocals, primarily by touring drummer Dodo NKishi, while Varcharz (2006) follows an eclectic, off-kilter electronic path.

This year MOM performed the world premiere of their pieces "skik field" (pt. 1, 2, 11) that were commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The electronic duo composed the pieces, including the instrumental parts that were played live by 12 members of the CSO.

Mouse on Mars own the independent music label Sonig for experimental, electronic and non genre specific music.
